Eye Injuries


The delicate tissues inside and around the eye need protection, It is common to get soap, shampoo, or makeup in your eyes. While these might burn a little bit, flushing out your eyes with water could be an ideal option

Any Foreign body in the eye can make the eye will feel uncomfortable, painful . The eye becomes red and a corneal ulcer can develop if immediate treatment is not initiated. Some common eye injuries, such as deep puncture wounds from accidents, or while playing any sort of outdoor games could require immediate treatment or surgery to prevent permanent eye damage resulting in vision loss

Chemical injuries can also result in loss of vision, alkaline being the most dangerous. The amount of damage depends on the chemical, how long it's in the eye, and how deep inside it went. The best way to treat a chemical burn is to flush out the eye with cool water for at least 15 minutes. If you have any eye injury, contact your eye care practitioner immediately for advice.

Types of eye injuries:

1. Corneal Abrasion such as from fingernails or tree branch

2. Object in the Eye- such as small pieces of grit, wood or metal particle

3. Chemical Burns –Exposure to Household cleaning products or Industrial chemical exposure

4. Blunt Trauma- Such as cuts from glass or tools

5. Radiation Exposure such as exposure to UV lights from sun or Lamps

6. Blows to the Eye- such as being hit by a fist, elbow or ball

7. Wearing Contact Lenses incorrectly or for long hours can also cause eye injuries

Preventing eye injuries

Many eye injuries are preventable . It is important to take appropriate safety precautions during daily activities or at work for eg. Wearing eye protection when using power tools. Safety instructions should be followed . Be particularly careful to while using harmful chemicals.
