What is Microlaryngeal Surgery?

Microlaryngeal surgery (MLS) is a precise operation on the voice box (larynx) done through the mouth under general anaesthesia, using an operating microscope and fine instruments. There are no cuts on the neck. It is used to remove or treat:

  • Vocal cord nodules, polyps and cysts
  • Leukoplakia (white patches) and other growths needing a biopsy
  • Long-standing hoarseness or change in voice that does not improve with medicines or voice rest

What is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is surgery to straighten a bent (deviated) nasal septum, the wall between the two sides of the nose. It is done from inside the nose, so there are no visible scars. Septoplasty can help with:

  • Blocked nose on one or both sides
  • Mouth breathing and snoring
  • Repeated sinus infections or headaches linked to nasal blockage
  • Nose bleeds caused by a deviated septum

When sinus disease is also present, septoplasty may be combined with endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Learn more about nose and sinus care at our hospital.

Recovery

Both procedures are usually done as day-care or with a one-night stay. After microlaryngeal surgery, a short period of voice rest helps the vocal cords heal. After septoplasty, mild nasal blockage for 1–2 weeks is normal; saline sprays and follow-up visits help the nose heal well.

Microlaryngeal Surgery & Septoplasty – FAQs

Is microlaryngeal surgery painful?

Microlaryngeal surgery is done under general anaesthesia, so there is no pain during the operation. A mild sore throat for a few days afterwards is common and settles with simple medicines.

How long should I rest my voice after microlaryngeal surgery?

Your ENT surgeon will usually advise complete or partial voice rest for a few days, followed by gradual return to normal speaking. The exact period depends on what was treated on the vocal cords.

Does septoplasty change the shape of my nose?

No. Septoplasty straightens the inside wall of the nose to improve breathing. It is done from inside the nose and does not change the outside shape of the nose.

How long does it take to recover from septoplasty?

Most patients return to office or school within about a week. Some nasal stuffiness is normal for 1–2 weeks, and breathing continues to improve as the nose heals over the following weeks.
